Even if you use a translation app on your phone, do you ever feel like you still don’t understand school letters?
Recently, I spoke with a parent, let’s call him “Parent B.” He received a printout from his boy’s elementary school. He used Google Translate, and he understood the words. But he was still confused.
“The letter says ‘items needed for the new semester,’ but my boy says he doesn’t need to bring anything. I don’t know who to believe. I don’t know the rules of Japanese schools.”
This is a very common problem. The difficulty isn’t just the Japanese language. It’s the “unwritten rules” and “unique culture” of Japanese public schools.
For example, terms like “Zoukin” (dust cloth) or “Uwabaki” (indoor shoes) are simple words, but knowing where to buy them, when to take them home to wash, and how to name them… that requires cultural background knowledge. A translation app can’t teach you that context.
I am here to bridge that cultural gap.
When you receive a confusing letter:
- Don’t worry if you don’t understand the context. It’s not your fault.
- Take a photo and send it to me via LINE or Facebook Messenger.
- Tell me what your child is saying, too.
I won’t just translate the words. I will explain “what the school actually expects parents to do” based on the context.

【事例】「子どもはこう言うけど、手紙の意味がわからない…助けて！」
スマホの翻訳アプリを使っても、「結局、学校の手紙の意味がわからない」と感じることはありませんか？
先日、あるお父さん（Bさんとしましょう）から相談がありました。 息子さんの小学校からプリントが配られました。彼はGoogle翻訳を使い、書いてある単語の意味はわかりました。でも、彼は混乱していました。
「手紙には『新学期の準備物』と書いてあるのに、息子は『何も持っていかなくていい』と言うんです。どっちを信じればいいのか……。私は日本の学校のルールを知らないので、背景がわかりません」
これは非常によくある悩みです。 難しさは、日本語の言葉そのものだけではありません。日本の公立学校特有の**「暗黙のルール」や「独特の文化」**にあります。
例えば、「ぞうきん」や「上履き」という言葉自体は簡単です。でも、「どこで買うのが一般的か」「いつ持ち帰って洗うのか」「どこに名前を書くべきか」……そうしたことは、文化的背景がないとわかりません。翻訳アプリは、そこまでの「文脈」は教えてくれないのです。
私は、その「文化のギャップ」を埋めるお手伝いをします。
混乱する手紙を受け取ったら：
- 文脈がわからなくても焦らないでください。あなたのせいではありません。
- 写真を撮って、LINE、もしくはFacebook Messenger で私に送ってください。
- お子さんが何と言っているかも教えてください。
